Program Overview:

Remaining well hydrated during physical activity - especially activities in warm environments - maintains important physiological functions, reduces the perception of effort, and increases exercise capacity. Consuming too little or too much fluid during physical activity compromises physiological function and jeopardizes health.

In this program, two of the world's leading experts in sports nutrition and hydration, Dr. Ronald Maughan and Dr. Bob Murray, will review the key elements related to the science of hydration and physical activity with special emphasis on the benefits of remaining properly hydrated and the risks of drinking too little or too much.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe how small changes in the hydration status of the human body affect important cardiovascular and thermoregulatory functions;
  • Use research to explain how drinking enough fluid during physical activity to minimize loss of body weight (i.e., minimize dehydration) sustains physiological functions and improves performance;
  • Explain how consuming too much fluid during physical activity increases the risk of hyponatremia, a potentially life-threatening electrolyte imbalance;
  • Discuss how remaining well hydrated throughout the day has important implications for optimizing health and minimizing the risk of various diseases.

Speakers:

Ronald Maughan, PhD

Dr. Ron Maughan is Professor of Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Loughborough University and a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. His research interests are in the physiology, biochemistry and nutrition of exercise performance, with an interest in both the basic science of exercise and the applied aspects that relate to health and to performance in sport. Professor Maughan established the Masters Degree program in Sport and Exercise Nutrition and a distance learning MSc program in Sports Nutrition at Loughborough University. He has chaired the Human and Exercise Physiology group of the Physiological Society and the Sports Nutrition Working Group of the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In addition, he has served as an adviser to UK Sport, UK Athletics, the FA, FIFA, the Irish Sports Council and to various other sporting bodies. In 2006-07 he was adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee enquiry on Human Enhancement Technologies in Sport.Professor Maughan obtained his BSc (Physiology) and PhD from the University of Aberdeen, and held a lecturing position in Liverpool before returning to Aberdeen where he was based for almost 25 years.
