Program Overview:

In this program, Julie Schwartz, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, ACSM-HFS, and Lola Coke, PhD, APRN-BC, ACNS, FAHA, FPCNA, provide a lively presentation on the principles of motivational interviewing and other behavior change tools. Every healthcare professional needs a “toolkit” of different behavior change strategies to deal with diverse populations of patients. The program will include a role play scenario to demonstrate motivational interviewing principles.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this self-study learning module, health professionals will be able to:

  • Use two motivational interviewing principles with patients to promote physical activity behavior change.
  • Discuss how to use additional behavior change strategies with patients to increase physical activity.
  • Implement tools to help patients move from an inactive lifestyle to an active lifestyle that meets recommended physical activity guidelines.

Julie Schwartz MS, RD, CSSD, LD, ACSM-HFS (Speaker)

Julie currently is Coordinator of Nutrition Services at Emory Bariatric Center and owner of Nutri-Well Coaching. Emory Bariatric Center offers a full spectrum of Bariatric services including surgical and medical interventions. She has over twenty years of experience working with individuals, groups, and corporations in wellness initiatives, weight management, nutrition, behavior modification, and personal training. Julie combines her training as a wellness coach with her expertise in nutrition and fitness to offer a fresh language and approach to weight management emphasizing client driven, systematic, doable steps which builds confidence and sustainability.

Lola Coke, PhD, APRN-BC, CNS, FAHA, FPCNA (Speaker)

Dr. Lola Coke is an Assistant Professor in Adult Health Nursing at Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Coke has worked as a cardiovascular nurse for 30 years; 15 as a Cardiovascular Clinical Nurse Specialist. Her acute care experience ranges from intermediate cardiac critical care to care of post open heart and peripheral vascular surgery patients. Her research area of interest includes the impact of resistance training on household physical activities and quality of life in women experiencing cardiac events. She was awarded an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship in 2001 and developed a “Healthy Heart” program for underserved African American women, continuing the program for two years, and currently serves on the Advisory Council for the program.
