Program Overview:

Join JoAnne M. Foody, M.D., Kathy Berra and moderator Catherine Christie , PhD, RD, for this informative and thought-provoking presentation on women and cardiovascular health. Program topics include a discussion of the important role that women play in influencing the heart health of their family and community, strategies to assess and stratify women into high risk, at risk, and optimal risk categories for cardiovascular disease, and evidence-based approaches to cardiovascular disease prevention for patients with hypertension, lipid abnormalities, and diabetes. Both presentations stress the importance of lifestyle approaches to the prevention of cardiovascular disease in women. The new Women and Heart Disease Guidelines from the American Heart Association (released February 14, 2011) are also discussed, with a focus on implications for patient care. Presenters:

Joanne M. Foody, MD, FACC, FAHA

Dr. Foody is an Associate Professor of Medicine, and Cardiovascular Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Cardiovascular Wellness Center at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospitals, as well as Medical Director of the Pollin Cardiovascular Wellness Program for Women. Dr. Foody received her BA from Princeton University in 1986, and her MD from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine in 1990. She completed her internal medicine training at Brigham and Women's Hospital and training in general cardiology and preventive cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Kathy Berra, MSN, ANP, FAANP, FAA

Kathy Berra co-founded a community based program for cardiac rehabilitation which has become a model for similar programs nationwide. Kathy's current research is with the Life Study at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. LIFE is evaluating a variety of biophysical and psychosocial responses to physical activity in seniors. She is past president of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association where she currently serves on the Board of Directors. She has published extensively in the field of CVD risk reduction. She was honored as "Clinician of the Year" by the AHA Council on Cardiovascular Nursing in 2009.

Catherine Christie, PhD, RD, FADA (Moderator)

Catherine Christie is the Director of Nutrition Programs and Director of the MSH/Dietetic Internship Program in the College of Health at the University of North Florida. She is also President of the Florida Dietetic Association and is past chair of the American Dietetic Association Ethics Committee. Dr. Christie is Editor of the Florida Dietetic Association Manual of Medical Nutrition Therapy, and Associate Editor of Nutrition and Well-Being A-Z. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards and certifications including Recognized Young Dietitian, Florida's Distinguished Dietitian, Florida Dietetic Association President's Outstanding Service Award, and Certified Nutrition Specialist.
